For his part, Ethan kept quiet as he followed along with the others, doing his best to ignore the sticky, oppressive heat of the lush jungle. It really was like being back in hot, swampy Arkansas in the summer; if it wasn't for the wild tangle of vines, ferns and trees, he would have almost believed that he was still in the marshy Natural State. When the bush simply grew too thick for him to easily keep up, however, he summoned up his Keyblade and put it to work as a machete, smashing out a path through the undergrowth. The elves seemed to weave through the impenetrable bush with an effortless grace, one which he simply couldn't hope to match.

Of course, chopping through the scrub was fairly noisy, and thanks to the racket he made, several creepy crawlies took notice of the party's passage. Shadows flitted through the forest canopy in silent pursuit, flashing from branch to branch and gathering their brothers as they went. One of the hated Keys was present in their quiet forest. The Light called to them, whetting their hunger as they gathered, like crows to a battlefield.

Soon, they would fall upon the small party below them, hoping to feast on fresh hearts.

"I'm Asmodian. And it's a type of potion." Bastian responded, but that was the only comment he made as Legode and Drizzt continued to talk. They really are from somewhere different, aren't they...

He shrugged and nodded when Legode asked him to follow, and put his greatsword back on his back. While the elves took the lead, Bastian found himself tearing through the undergrowth alongside Ethan, using his claws to clear the path.

"How do they do it?" he mumbled to himself, but loud enough that Ethan could likely hear him.

For Drizzt, the warm jungles felt a lot like the underdark to him, the warm air around him reminding him of his earlier years before that fated first trip to the surface. Legode on the other hand, was reminded of the warm, dusty air of the lands around Riftwood, her own home, and after learning the Shining South of Faerun was once the ancient homeland of the drow before their Descent into the Underdark, she wondered if her father and uncles felt comfortable to be back in the land of their ancestors.

Of course, Legode then thought about what Zikel had said his race was, an Asmodean, and shuddered at the thought of something naming themselves after the master of the nine hells. Drizzt, having dealt more with the abyssal demons than the Devils of the Hells, was only suspicious of Bastian, and hoped the winged humanoid was not as evil as the name of his race let on. The ranger then noted the irony of his distrust, having been associated with his people's reputation most of the time, but that thought soon left him as Legode stopped at a clearing and frowned at what was inside it.

"Looks like we have company." she said, taking her hair clip off and putting into it's rapier form, and then drawing her black magical dagger, which gave off a purple glow and seemed to chill the warm air around it. Drizzt, noticing Twinkle's sapphire glowing as well, drew his scimitars while Yethrys stood behind them, growling at the monkey like heartless in front of them.

"It seems before we train, we will have to claim this clearing first!" Drizzt then said, his lavender eyes beginning to burn with the idea of the coming battle.

"Indeed." Legode said, and soon they ran into the clearing, starting the fight between the group and fourteen heartless monkeys.

The agile Powerwilds, remnants of Ansem the Dark's attempted conquest of Kingdom Hearts, scattered before the elves' charge with simian agility. They hooted and capered, scampering out of reach mere inches ahead of thrust blades as they worked to surround the druid and ranger. As they danced and chittered, three more of the darklings tumbled out of the brush, their coats bright orange and heavy slingshots clasped in their clawed hands. Bouncywilds, sisters to the blue-coated beasts thronged around Legode and Drizzt; unlike their brothers, these preferred to stay well out of melee range as they lobbed heavy stones from their slings, with great force and deadly accuracy.

Just as the entire pack started to fall upon the surrounded warriors, though, they suddenly froze and turned as one to stare at the treeline. Ethan staggered into the clearing, bleeding from various scratches and gritting his teeth as his weapon dragged him bodily through the undergrowth towards the massing of darkness ahead.

The Ancient Enemy had been sighted. These false darklings would not be the first the Key had claimed, nor would they be the last.

As for the heartless, most of the pack turned towards what they saw as a towering pillar of delicious Light to consume. These small flickers were not nearly so appetizing as what had just staggered into their midst. Nearly half of the beasts immediately broke from their surround on the elves, charging after the Keyblade. Ethan's eyes widened in fright as what seemed to be an endless horde broke off and came after him, hooting and screeching as they ran...

Bastian had already been ready for battle when he moved into the clearing, his greatsword drawn and ready to assault the Powerwilds. And then Ethan came in, and the Heartless came in charging.

As a Templar, it was a situation that Bastian was trained for, and instinct took over.

He moved quickly, putting himself between Ethan and the approaching Powerwilds. His eyes burning red, he let out an intimidating roar, one that was meant to draw the attention of the enemy to him. Whether it would work on creatures as mindless as Heartless was another story, but it was a way to bolster himself for combat.

He stood a moment, catching his breath, and then charged into the Heartless swinging.

The thrill of the fight. It is a wonderful feeling that many adventurers feel from time to time, and sometimes just surviving one battle doesn't always mean you'll survive the next. Of course, as Legode and Drizzt were from a world that had people that could raise the dead, sometimes the amount of gold that was needed to pay for raising the dead, or even a resurrection was on hand. Nor were scrolls and rods that could do the same thing at the moment.

In other words, survival was mandatory here.

Drizzt moved quickly among the power wilds, and did his best to block the stones fired by the Bouncywilds. Legode meanwhile, noticing how fast they moved, smiled a bit as she heard Zikel's roar and saw some of the heartless go towards him, while some stayed in place.

"Yethrys, guard my left!" she said, the Dire Wolf understanding as it went to the Druid's blind spot as she began casting a spell. "Entangle!" with the spell cast, as risky as it was doing so, Legode saw vines start to grow out of the ground around her, the heartless that had started to charge at her getting caught, as well as a few of the ones that gone after Ethan and Zikel. Unfortunately, the risky part of the spell was in effect as well, since it not only immobilized enemies, but if someone wasn't agile enough, an ally could get caught too and be forced to only attack anything that got near him.

Unfortunately for Legode, she ended up getting caught in the spell too as her legs were captured by the vines. Thankfully, she could still attack as she struck two of the heartless near her down. She could still move a little, and while she was at the moment, half way afraid since she was caught in the vines, she did her best to ignore it and keep fighting. As long as she could still move her arms, she would be fine.

Drizzt meanwhile, once the spell was cast, kept moving and jumping around the vines, taking down the heartless that managed to escape and run. His lavender eyes were burning from the heat of battle, and as he went after the Bouncywilds with their weapons, did his best to keep his allies safe while Yethrys helped guard Legode, not yet being caught in the vines himself.

Of the heartless on the field, only seven managed to escape the grasping vines of Legode's spell: the fleet-footed Bouncywilds, who easily leapt out of the spell's grappling embrace before it could latch on, and four Powerwilds who hadn't been touching the ground just then anyway. Three of them were amongst those attacking Bastian, and chose to take advantage of their continued freedom by streaming past the Templar in a stampede. After all, only those who actually reached the prize would get to eat.

The last of the free Heartless had been in the middle of a slick flip as it dodged one of Yethrys' lunging snaps, only losing an ear in the process as it twisted away from his slavering fangs.

Those rooted near their opponents fought fiercely, but the Powerwilds' greatest strength was in their agility. Without that, their unarmored bodies would be extremely vulnerable to the party's steel.

The Bouncywilds, for their part, did all they could to avoid Drizzt's pursuit and the snapping vines at the same time, all while lobbing stones and dropping silly-looking banana peels to trip up the Ranger as he danced through the Entanglement after him.

unacceptable

The Keyblade surged in Ethan's hand, sending a jolt of icy, white-hot power down his arm as it swung itself around to strike off the vines wrapping around his ankles. The enchantment snatching at him burst into a million shards of mana as it was pitted against the Keyblade's furious might, and its wielder stumbled as he was freed. A scant second later, the scared, confused Keybearer blurred across the clearing in that same, sliding, odd charge that had been pitted against Drizzt, slashing at a heartless as he zipped past. It burst in a swirl of shadow, and Ethan tripped and fell on his face...but not before the Keyblade burst free of the tangle at the last second, buzzing viciously at another heartless in a crackling sawblade of violet rage. Strike Raid struck true, and another heartless dissipated even as Ethan struggled to his feet as quickly as he was able, with fresh vines attempting to root him in place...

The rooting of the nearest Heartless was a boon for Bastian, whose speed and reach was poor even with the greatsword. There was no need to worry about finesse, and he sliced through a pair of them, dissipating both of them in a burst of shadow. He paused, surprised at the sudden effectiveness, but he didn't have long to consider it. Three of them flowed passed him, and he turned to pursue them, but the grasping vines of the Entanglement spell caught his legs, and he growled, trying and failing to pull free.

The remaining Powerwilds took advantage of Bastian's distraction with a returning attack, and Bastian moved as much as the vines would let him, parrying the blows he could at such an awkward angle. "Can't you control your spell!" he shouted, sounding annoyed.

"Unfortunately not!" Legode shouted back, "It has always done this no matter who casts the damned spell! I hate using it myself because there is no telling who gets caught in it and who doesn't! But, because of how fast the enemy is moving, I had to take the vithing risk!" Legode shouted back to the asmodean, just before casting another spell.

"Greater Magic Fang!" she said, and Yethrys felt the effects immediately. Letting out a howl, the wolf's body seemed to glow with power as he moved through the area, managing to escape the vines, and took out one of the Bouncywilds just as Drizzt, avoiding the bananapeels, killed another. Legode herself however, managed to be released then and she quickly ran through and took care of the other power wilds.

Unfortunately, it seemed the dice of fate didn't like her very much that day as she slipped on one of the banana peels still on the ground and ended up falling back into the writhing mass of vines, where this time her entire body was bound to the ground. She couldn't move, and with the chance any remaining heartless may go after her now, she was also in trouble.

"Oh no... no... not again..." Legode started to say as she began to panic and struggle against the vines herself, "I'm not going to be forced to watch others get hurt again!"

Yethrys and Drizzt, hearing Legode's words with their hearing looked at each other and decided to move to protect the druid from any heartless that went near her.

"Legode, keep calm! We'll be there to help you soon!" Drizzt called out, while he took out a powerwild that decided to go after the druid, the powered up Dire wolf Yethrys, knowing what was going through her mind at the moment, went into guard mode and growled menacingly at any heartless that was coming towards his partner, daring them to even try and go after her.

Only two Heartless remained of the small band that had ambushed the travelers; one lone Bouncywild who was fleeing for her life from the pissed-off Drizzt hot on her heels, and the last Powerwild who had had the misfortune of being rooted outside of everyone's reach.

The Keyblade banked back around in a slow, majestic arc before leveling off in a heading that took it straight towards the last Powerwild. The ancient weapon hummed promises of coming oblivion as it closed on its target...only to be batted aside in a flash of blue sparks as the Heartless brought its own power to bear, just long enough to change the Key's angle of attack. Thwarted, the tool of Light vanished in a ripple of distorted space and reappeared in its wielder's hand, hacking and slashing at the vines clinging to him once again.

"Jesus fucking Christ, I hate these stupid god damn vines! Get! The! Fuck! Off!" he shouted as he chopped at the entangling nuisances, mostly with his own muscle. The Key seemed to be sulking about its failed solo act.

Bastian ripped at the vines with claws and talons, teeth gritted. Rooting spells were bad enough when cast by an enemy. It was even more of a pain when it was an ally who had done it.

With a growl, he brought out his wings, which he beat rapidly to help him rip free of the vines. They didn't give him much altitude, but it gave him an extra level of maneuverability. He bounded his way across the field of vines towards the last Powerwild, leaping into the air with a yell and destroying it with a downward slash.

He put his wings away, but not before the vines managed to pull a few feathers out, and he growled as he started to fight them off again. "This damn spell... how much longer is it going to last?" He couldn't even see Legode anymore, but her companion seemed to know where she was... that warg would probably protect her better than anyone.

As soon as the asmodean had asked, the spell soon ended as the vines that had appeared faded back into the ground, Drizzt just managing to destroy the Bouncywild that remained. Now that she was free, and saw Yethrys nearby guarding her. Legode sat up quickly and tried her best to calm down as Yethrys let out a whine.

Drizzt, walking over to the druid to check on her, spoke up.

"Ethan, are you alright?" he said first, not wanting to forget his student in the whole affair, before turning to Legode and kneeling down to make sure she wasn't injured. "Legode, what happened? I and Yethrys heard you mention something about being forced to watch someone get hurt again. Were you in this situation before?"

Legode jumped a bit when the ranger spoke, and looked at him, Drizzt noticing that she had a look in her eye similar to a frightened animal. Relaxing a bit she looked away, a bit uncomfortable with the answer, since the ranger hadn't figured out she was half drow, and was worried about what would happen once he did find out.

"It's... complicated Do'Urden," Legode said, "and I'd rather not talk about it right now. But if you have to know something, some times dark moments can haunt us." The druid then stood up and patted Yethrys's side as she quietly thanked him. The ranger, sensing something was up, then tried to see if Yethrys could give him any information, but unfortunately, the dire wolf would not let him. A curiosity to the Ranger, and he decided to leave the subject alone, however he was suspicious of the druid's animal companion a little more than the previous encounter they had in Radiant Garden. Getting up himself, Drizzt then walked over to Ethan to see if he needed help getting up.

Planting his sullen Keyblade into the ground, Ethan used it as a prop to help himself to his feet and slapped the dust and shredded grass off of his clothing, frowning at the green stripes that had been left on his pants by the vines.

"Yeah, I'm fine. Good work, Drizzt." he sighed as he surveyed the damage to his clothing. It wasn't bad, per se, but he was definitely stained. Oh well, maybe it would help serve as camouflage or something. "You move like a ballet dancer on crack. I don't understand how you kept out of those vines."

Bastian let out a breath of relief as the vines faded, leaving only a memory and the stain of green on his claws. He looked at them disdainfully, but there was no benefit to vanity right now anyway. That was an Elyos thing to worry about.

"Well then," he said, walking towards the group. "That was interesting... I've never been able to deal that sort of damage to the Heartless. No one on Asmodae can, except maybe the Shedim Lords." He looked at Ethan, his eyes more on the keyblade than the one wielding it. "They seemed to be drawn to you. Is that normal?"

"I... was probably just lucky." Drizzt said, though he was confused by what Ethan called him, when Zikel spoke up though, the drow raised an eyebrow at the man's statement, and noticed where he was staring.

"It is interesting they went for Ethan when he entered the area." he said, before looking around and seeing Yethrys lick Legode a little bit. Unable to ask what Legode was hiding though, he did also try and figure out what she meant. Was it possible that something in Legode's past caused her to be in a situation similar to what happened in the fight? If so, what was it, and what was possibly terrible enough to cause her to panic like that?

Legode meanwhile, looked back at the boys and spoke up, her eyes seemingly looking dead again while she spoke.

"Perhaps the keyblade attracts them like a magnet." she said, "Much like trouble for any adventurer... or just for anyone unlucky in any world."

Well.

The combination of being the center of attention, however briefly, and the wash of endorphins left in the wake of the adrenaline high of combat, worked perfectly in spurring Ethan into doing something nonsensical.

Flipping his Key around, he wrapped both hands around the blade and held it as though it were a microphone stand, before belting out a little number by Bruce Springsteen.

"And she was bliiinded by the Light! Cut loose like a deuce, another runner in the night! Bliiinded by the Light, She got down but she never got tight, but she'll make it alright!" he sang, dancing and jiving with his weapon, which glowed along with the slightly off-key high notes as his whimsical jubilance drew it out of its funk.

"What? Too much?" he asked once his antics stopped, looking around at the others who were surely staring in bemusement and/or horror by now. "You always find the longest shadows near the light. These little bastards are going to crop up fairly often if you hang around me long; why do you think I was holed up in that sunny little world? They don't show up there very often, and when they do it's never enough to be a threat."

Bastian didn't really know what to say, as Ethan started to... sing? Dance? This was the human who held the key to saving his world, and here he was treating it like some kind of game. He rubbed his forehead with a sigh.

"Right, so... it's the key to destroying the Heartless, but it also draws them in. In which case I can see why you're getting training... it looked more like you were being dragged around rather than actually fighting."

Drizzt, Legode, and Yethrys just stared at Ethan as he sang terribly, causing their ears to hurt, and the two elves collectively facepalmed once it was over.

After Bastian't comment though, Legode gave a chuckle. "It seems he hasn't improved since I met him then, and why am I not surprised he decided to run and hide like a coward? Probably because he was whining the whole time when I first encountered him."

You're going to get back at him for calling you a twelve year old boy, and also make this training session of his a hell, aren't you? Yethrys growled quietly to Legode. And after seeing the druid smirk, let out a laugh. I see. I'll watch from the sidelines, just be sure to leave him alive for Drizzt to actually have something to train later. the wolf then let out a series of high pitched yelps as he laughed louder, and walked over to the side of the clearing and laid down.

"Oh yeah, har har har and also fiddly-dee. Listen here, not everyone grows up on some war-torn world of magical artifacts and grand heroes like the Old Man over here. My world was nice and quiet, the wars were all thousands of miles away, I've never seen a day of combat in my life. Well, I mean I have, but that's just since I've been here. Look, the point is, I'm a carpenter's son from one of the most mundane worlds you could possibly ask for. A farm boy. How many farmers would you expect to take up some grand, idiotic destiny and sally forth in the name of a world that isn't his? Because I'm willing to give it a fucking shot. If you can claim better than that, let's hear it. If not, hold your damn tongue; just because it took me months to work up the nerve to try doesn't mean I never did." Ethan said, suddenly cross with Legode and her dismissive attitude. He didn't have to take that sort of guff from someone who hadn't been anything but a pain in his neck.

Bastian chose to bite his tongue through Ethan's tirade. True, the keyblade wielder was easy to mock. But it was also true that it was hard to learn how to fight from nothing. He'd done it himself.

"Destiny's a tricky thing. It doesn't really care where you come from." He crossed his arms. "But you sound ready to rise to the challenge, at least." He looked towards Drizzt and Legode. "So... what is your training plan, anyway?"
