"Yes it's obviously magic. But I mean what KIND of magic is it?" Tippy elaborated before going on to list some possibilities. "Is it Mathemancy, Necroeconomics, Psionics, Viking Wizardry, or Golemancy? Hmm is it perhaps Egyptian Magic or maybe even COMMUNISM!?!" as he said this Tippy imagined the elevator being originally constructed by a series of interlocking blocks falling into place before being set into motion by the will of the proletariat masses.

Tippy was terrified of handling raw mana first hand but even so magic in general interested him as a field of study. He theorized with a good enough understanding of it's underlying principles he could harness it in his Rogue Science. He one day hoped to make an advanced suit of powered armor. Since leveling he could envision the exterior, covered in gears and venting steam. But he still lacked any inspirational insight on the internal mechanisms and how such a thing might eventually be constructed. Tippy in his still semi relaxed state then thought to himself "Heh being mad might not be so bad if I end up looking so awesome."

Drizzt only recognized one thing on the list of "magics" Tippy mentioned, and that was Psionics, the power of the mind in his world.

"I... do not think it's Psionics... or any of those others..." he said, just as the elevator lurched and started to go up. He also gave Ethan a look as it seemed whatever his student said, Tippy would ask about it in ways that made him seem more and more like a madman. He then patted Guen's head, the panther being the only thing keeping him from losing his patience completely at the moment.

"Viking Wizardry? Necroeconomics? Just what sort of cockamamie world are you from anyway? Those are the goofiest-sounding schools of magic I've ever heard of." Ethan commented as the elevator continued to climb. He had never heard of necroeconomics, but it sounded abso-fucking-lutely bananas. This guy had to be from one of those tongue-in-cheek little indie games; the ones with the punny titles and 'charmingly quirky' gameplay. Great. A nutball from a joke game. Terrific. Ethan would bet even money that this guy had a gimmick of some kind that made him fairly powerful once he was set up; joke characters always did.

About a quarter of the way into their ascent, the platform suddenly slowed dramatically and the hairs on the back of Ethan's neck stood up. A certain electricity was in the air, one that was rapidly becoming familiar as he continued to travel around the multiverse.

He might as well be able to hear the battle music kick in at this point.

Scrambling to the edge on a hunch, Ethan looked over the side to find... an odd looking ribbon trailing far below the elevator?

The ribbon twitched.

The platform lurched to the side.

Icewater splashed into Ethan's nervous system.

"Pops! Pucker up, we've got a big one!" he shouted as a large, clawed hand gripped the edge of the platform, followed shortly by another...and then the head and shoulders of a Heartless that could only be described as boss-tier. A pair of antennae on its head whipped and waved wildly, its blank yellow eyes cast as eerie glow onto the party, and the thing just made itself altogether creepy.

Suddenly, the beast bellowed and it dug its fingers into the sides of the elevator, stopping its ascent entirely and slowly but surely dragging the whole platform back down.

The last vestiges of Tippy's calm shattered as the platform lurched. "I knew I should have stayed in the treasure chamber!" He shouted as he started rummaging through his inventory to see if there was anything of use. All he had were his crafting tools and some worthless metal ingots, gems, and other various scraps. Sure some of it was diamond and platinum but they didn't have much going for them in terms of utility. Then he noticed his aluminum ingots and had an idea...

"Rust! I need rust!" He shouted as he took out his ingot grinder and began hastily rendering some of the aluminum into a fine powder. He completed the task with unnatural speed. Tippy's family had always seemed capable of completing any given crafting task within the span of a single "Turn". Now that he had the aluminum powder he'd be able to whip up something nasty if he could just get ahold of some rust. Until then though he was completely unarmed save for his camera which he pulled out hoping the flash might be able to at least momentarily stun the enemy.

Drizzt did his best to keep his balance when the platform lurched again, Twinkle shining brightly as it warned of danger. Guenhwyvar's growl soon led to the drow seeing the monstrous heartless appear.

"I see it!" he called out to Ethan, but when Tippy asked his question the drow quickly added, "I do not have any rust! Right now, we need to concentrate on fighting that thing!"

Looking towards his panther, the drow then charged for one hand, Guen going to the other as the two began attacking the hands, Drizzt swinging his blades and slashing at the fingers, and Guen biting and raking the hand with her teeth and claws.

Ethan rapidly unshipped his shield from its place on his back and jammed his arm roughly into the mountings, jerking the strap tight and seizing the handle in a white knuckle grip as he stepped up to the head of the beast. Its eyes flashed brighter for a moment when it saw the Keyblade appear in his hand, leering maliciously at the hated weapon. Its wielder had his mouth open for a snappy one liner that was sure to be truly witty when the thing suddenly lunged for him, jaws agape in a bid to bite Ethan in half.

The fangs scraped against Ethan's shield as he shoved it in the way, sliding back across the stone floor from the sheer weight of the impact. One knee threatened to buckle as the Heartless leaned forward onto the platform, tilting the whole thing crazily...but suddenly the hand that Drizzt was chopping away at lost its grip.

The other hand held a tenuous grasp on the other side of the elevator. The floor tipped towards the remaining hand at an angle not far from true vertical as the boss' weight found purchase on that edge, and the whole party slid towards it at an alarming rate.

For Ethan, time seemed to slow. The solution was obvious; knock off the other hand. He wasn't there yet, though, sliding as he was from the middle of the platform. He wouldn't get there for at least another half a second.

"Hmm, rust, rust, where can I get some rust?!" Tippy frantically thought to himself after Drizzt's response. As the beast lunged at Ethan he belatedly remembered the cog on his cap. "Gah I'm so stupid." He admonished himself as he stowed away his camera and reached up to tear the iron gear ornament from his leather cap. He quickly proceeded to pass the gear through his ingot grinder rendering it into rust powder. "Wait till it gets a taste of this!" he muttered to himself as he was about to then proceed in combining the powders. The platform suddenly lurched and he began sliding towards the edge. He had retreated to the end of the platform furthest from the beast back when he'd ground the rust powder. Thus as he slid he would be the last to reach the hand. Not that he could do much more on that front anyways that wasn't already being handled by six hundred pounds of magical panther.

"Gah now that just isn't fair! Changing the dungeon mechanics like that!" Tippy raged against the Rougelike Gods. "Krong dang it the floor is supposed to remain level!" he cried as he scrambled to find purchase on the tilting platform. Quickly tucking away the powder packets as he did so.

Drizzt had to act quickly as the platform suddenly tilted, sheathing Icingdeath at breakneck speed and pulling out a dagger from his boot as he found himself rolling down the side, stabbing the dagger into the platform, the ranger gave a sigh of relief as he held on to it, having kept from falling.

And then Guen defeated the hand she was clawing and biting, causing it to pull away as the platform became level once again.

"Ethan!" he cried, "we need to destroy this thing quickly! Can't you use a spell on that monster?!

"Give me a break! I only know one spell!" Ethan complained as he scrambled back to his feet, ignoring the stinging pain on his knuckles from the gritty slide across the platform. He hurried to the edge, peering off cautiously to see what could be seen in the abyss.

To his dismay, the massive Heartless was clinging to the wall a few yards below them, sinking its claws into the sandstone and crawling up as though the sheer stone was a ladder. Apparently sensing his gaze, the monster let go with one hand and twisted to glare back, bellowing an unearthly howl of anger as it did so. After a scant moment of this staring contest, the beast turned back to its task of catching up to the elevator with gusto, climbing twice as fast as it had been before.

"Shit on a shingle."

Ethan did not sound very enthusiastic.

"Persistent bastards. I hate Heartless. Alright baby, don't let me down..." He swung the Keyblade forward to point at the foe bearing down upon them, aiming the blade as near the head as he could.

"Fire!" Heavy fireballs spat from the end of the key-like sword to impact the wall, exploding into big, greasy blossoms of flame and soot as the did so. The CHOOM CHOOM CHOOM of the spell firing rattled the air like artillery fire, but the boss climbed through the salvo relatively unhindered. The heat rolling up from the blasts was intense, but if anything it just seemed to make the monster climb faster.

As the platform stabilized once again Tippy returned to combining his recently ground powders. He used his tinkering tools to pack them into a crude ad hoc "bomb". With the final addition of a magnesium tape fuse it was complete. It amazed him how the Tinkering Kit always happened to have what ever obscure secondary materials it took to make a crafting recipe work. Stranger yet was how said scraps only ever appeared as needed when in the presence of a recipes ingredients. All the thermite bomb recipe had called for was rust and aluminum powder. Presented with said powders the kit had miraculously provided the bomb casing and fuse. Honestly he didn't think magnesium even existed in the dungeon outside the kit's content. One of these days he wanted to figure out how the kit worked but at the same time he realized it was his golden goose.

Amidst these thoughts he hefted up the finished bomb and started shouting. "Hah! Time for you to taste some burning metal d..." But he was cut off by the noise of Ethan's fireball barrage. The blooms of fire seemed to be imbued with great heat and concussive force and yet the creature seemingly shrugged them off. This momentarily shattered Tippy's hope that the thermite would be effective. But then he remembered his grandfather's favorite phrase "Fire. If it isn't working then you simply aren't using enough!" He lit the fuse and got ready to toss the incendiary device.

Hearing Ethan curse, Drizzt sheathed his blades and pulled out Taulmaril before running to the edge and aiming one of the silver arrows at the giant heartless as it moved faster towards the platform again.

Then the ranger fired, the arrow a streaking white light as it flew through the air, and upon hitting the monster, watched as a shockwave of light spread from the arrow for only a moment. Then he nocked another one to fire a gain, planning on using the arrows to hopefully slow the Heartless down and perhaps defeat it as quickly as possible.

The boss reacted very poorly indeed to Drizzt's hallowed arrows of Smite Evil. Roaring in pained fury, it leaped from the wall and sailed towards the elevator, apparently intent on smashing the whole platform out of the air in one decisive attack.

Gotta make it miss, gotta make it miss! Ethan's mind babbled rapidly as the beast bore down upon the party. How do I make it miss?!

While Ethan's brain was having a minor conniption, his arm decided to take things into its own hands, pardon the pun. Whipping the Keyblade forward in an overhand throw that would have made an NFL quarterback weep bitter tears of jealousy, he sent it on its way to intercept the boss in a buzzing disk of angry magic otherwise known as Strike Raid.

The boss reeled back in midair and smashed into the wall where it clung for the moment, stunned by the sudden impact of the Key.

Tippy found himself regretting having lit the fuse so early. He had planned to drop the bomb on the beast as it had been approaching the platform but then it made it's failed lunge which threw off Tippy's targeting. He was left holding a hot potato with a diminishing fuse that he had no way of putting out. The beast now clinging to the wall seemingly took a moment to gather it's wits before turning it's head and locking Ethan in it's gaze. It let out a thundering roar as if expressing rage at having been balked. Tippy realized this was his best chance. Not having much remaining fuse Tippy hastily tossed the thermite payload at the beasts gaping maw. The "bomb" sailed into the back of it's open mouth landing in it's gullet.

"As I was saying before... BURNING METAL DEATH! HAVE SOME! OH AND GUYS SHIELD YOUR EYES! " Tippy shouted as the thermite soon ignited. Unlike Ethan's fire spells the incendiary device had no explosive/concussive force. It however compensated for this by burning very bright and extremely hot, 2500°C to be precise. Tippy shielded his eyes as he'd instructed the others to do. The flaming metal emitted a harsh UV light that could burn out an unprotected retina at a close enough distance. These "Heartless" as the others had called them seemed to be made of darkness so he was hoping their physiology would not react well to light. If that failed to pan out though the creature still had a burning mass lodged in it's throat that could melt through an engine block. He wasn't quite sure what an engine block was but his mad inspiration informed him that melting one was supposed to be an impressive feat.

Drizzt kept firing arrow after arrow at the monster, smiling as he saw Ethan's keyblade hit it hard. The silver streaks of light also met their marks, and the ranger soon wondered how much more this monster could even take.

And then Tippy gave his warning before throwing something. Not wanting a repeat of the camera flash, Drizzt immediately squeezed his eyes shut as it went off.

The entire cavern strobed orange for a few brief seconds as the thermite grenade set the boss' head ablaze. It accomplished what simple plumes of flame could not by dint of burning at an appreciable fraction of the sun's all-consuming temperature; one could see the progress of the molten iron and frothing aluminum as it poured down the Heartless' throat, still burning. The creature wailed in mortal agony and heaved into the abyss, trying desperately to purge itself of the liquid metal that was chewing a hole through its innards. Unfortunately for it, it was unable to manage more than a pitiful retch before flakes of light started to spiral away from its form, bits and pieces of the hearts that had been taken to give it a physical body breaking loose as the monster's strength ebbed.

Only a few seconds passed before it lost its grip on the wall, its dissolving corpse vanishing into the abyss below.

"What an awful stench!" Ethan quipped after the glare of the thermite reaction faded away, covering his nose and mouth with the sleeve of his jacket. The smoke curling up from the dead boss' passing was thick, foul and greasy; a delight to any denizens of hell who might be nearby, but vomit inducing to almost anyone else. "Good job on the grenade, but try to throw in some air freshener next time. Roasted Heartless is nasty."

Mixed with the stench of it's demise Tippy could feel the rush of exp infusing his body. The powerful creature was apparently worth a considerable amount more than the previous large bodies. "NO! Not again!" Tippy cried out as he leveled. "Damit!" he said as he realized that the massive influx of points he had only just barely cleared the threshold to take him not just up to level 6 but 7 as well. His only consolation was that it would probably take hundreds of large bodies or nearly half a dozen more beasts like the one just felled before he'd have to worry about leveling again. With each of the recently gained levels he felt his mechanical aptitude increase. He was then dazed by the sudden influx of mad insights into the construction of myriad complex mechanisms.

"Goggles... I need to make a pair of goggles..." He then found himself muttering as he came to from his brief trance. Looking at the others he proceeded to say "Now that was sort of fun and all..." he was struck by the sensation that those words went against the very fiber of his being even as they left his lips.

"But please tell me that that we are near the exit of this wizard land. Or at the very least tell me there was only one of what ever the heck we just fought..." Now that voiced sentiment felt much more natural to him. He wanted out of this Krong forsaken extradimensional stretch of dungeon. At this point he didn't even care that he'd have to risk using a save device to do so, although he also suspected his burgeoning madness had something to do with the lack of concern...

Drizzt slung Taulmaril over his shoulder and covered his nose with one hand at the stench, using the other to pat Guenhwyvar's head as she went over to his side.

"Agreed." he said to Ethan, before hearing what Tippy had said and raising an eyebrow. "I do not think there are any more of those monsters, and I also believe that the save point should be close by, or if not, we should make it there very soon."
