The first appearance of the entity known as Vandal was recorded on the world of Traverse Town, where he destroyed much the the town's Third District and was reported to have cause a small number of casualties among the populace. It was at this time that he was confronted by a group of Interferences: Millie, Sarah and her companion Dorumon, the planeswalker Gideon Jurra, and a sentient android known as Jane. After a pitched battle, Vandal unleashed a beam weapon against the group with the intention of ending the battle. However, this attack was turned against him by Gideon, who cast a spell that delivered the same amount of damage the weapon dealt to him back onto it's user. Though not enough to eliminate either combatant, the physical harm caused by the assault severely weakened Vandal and forced the heartless to retreat. He was later ousted by the Interferences George Beaumont and Vigilante Man.

A few days after being cast out of Traverse town, Vandal wondered the multiverse in search of hearts to devour and regaining his lost strength. He eventually found himself upon the World That Never Was and encountered a powerful Nobody calling herself Desera, whose service he was quick to enter into. Immediately following the meeting, Vandal launched an attack against a small garrison of Resistor troops in the world-whale known as Monstro. The battle was brief before the small contingent was forced to retreat and the Resistor presence within the whale was removed. Hours later, another attack was launched in the world called the Land of Dragons, where a ship known as the Dredgion. The goal of this attack seems to have been capturing the vessel for use in the war, but this objective failed when the Dredgion was shot down. However, despite the mission's failure, Vandal was able to acquire four extremely powerful hearts into each of which he infused an equal portion of his power. From this, the Sapper Guard - a quartet of unique and powerful Heartless resembling Vandal's true form - were born, though Vandal did loss his true form in the process.

After failing to acquire the Dredgion, Vandal was reported to have invaded several undefended worlds in an effort to expand his forces. Weeks later, he visited the Black Garden in the Destiny universe to feed on the residual darkness there. It is here that he encountered another Heartless - Exsila - who attempted to stop him. The other Heartless was unsuccessful as Vandal had consumed the residual darkness left behind by the Gardens Black Heart. It is unclear what the Heartless's next move will be.
